PostSubject: The Deathwatch.   The Deathwatch. I_icon_minitimeMon Oct 06, 2014 9:24 pm

Going to be running a Deathwatch roleplay.

A squad of Space Marines, gathered from different chapters, and forced to work together by the Inquisition as Xenos hunters. The Astartes that are chosen, are regarded as the elite and prodigal of their chapters. They bring with them the particular skills of their own person, and the skills, traits, traditions and mannerisms of their Chapter. It would be a lie to say that they mesh perfectly together. The Inquisition does not care if they personally like each other, only that they do the job they are told to do.

This Kill-team, as they are called, are sworn to secrecy, never to reveal their objective or training they receive from Inquisitorial officers. Anything else, such as the nature of their enemy, and their new battle-brothers, is information they can choose to tell their chapter. When, and if, they return.

"The Deathwatch Space Marines serve the Ordo Xenos of the Imperial Inquisition as its Chamber Militant, the warriors of last resort when the Inquisition needs access to firepower greater than the Imperial Guard or a team of its own Acolytes or even Throne Agents can provide. Across the galaxy there are innumerable hostile alien civilizations that threaten Mankind, from the green-skinned Orks, to the monstrous Tyranids, sadistic Dark Eldar, spectral C'tan, and undying Necrons. It is the sacred task of the Deathwatch to stand sentry against all of these terrible xenos races. They are ready to act when such ancient evils rise to threaten Mankind once more. The Space Marines of the Deathwatch form the first, and often only, line of defense against these inhuman horrors."

Fifteen veterans from differing Astartes Chapters have been assembled and formed in to a Deathwatch Kill-team. Their armors have already received the ritual black paint-job, save for their right pauldron. They have all been instructed to meet together in Hall of Heroes, a resplendent, domed room inside of an Inquisition Ordo Xeno's frigate. It's domed roof is painted with frescoes of the God-Emperor of Mankind, His angels of death, the robed techpriests. An old piece of art, depicting images from the early years of the Great Crusade.

Tarkimachus of the Ultramarines, sits upon a raised stone throne at the back of the room, holding his chin in one hand and wondering up at the frescoes. Though his armor is painted black, the features, powerful and graceful all at once, of his Artificer armor are quite visible. His gold trimming on his armor and face-mask remain their vibrant gold, shining out from the jet-black. His eagle-masked helmet rests on his lap. He possesses the patrician features typical of Ultramarines, but with many battle-scars and an intense expression. He finds the images staring down at the room, this room where a Deathwatch Kill-team will truly be bonded, very fitting indeed. "Exquisite art, is it not? I do not need an artists eye to see that." He remarks to the brother seated beside him. Bellimo of the Blood Angels. An ancient man, peerless with the blade, save for the Chapter Master of the Blood angels. As with all Blood Angels, his armors artistry is galaxies beyond any others. His pale, long face with sunken cheeks and a tight mouth, along with dark circles under his eyes, make his gaze piercing. His white hair is kept short. "I could bore you with every important detail as to why it's wonderful... But that would take us the entire day." The Ultramarine chuckles shortly at that.

The appointed time of gathering has not yet arrived yet. Only two other brothers have arrived so far, quite early, eager to meet their squad. Gjenjho of the White Scars, and Asamod of the Dark Angels. The Dark Angel is dressed in standard Deathwatch battle-plate, save for a single trinket, the much venerated and respected Crux Terminatus. Wise he was, to not wear his Terminator plate to a meeting. The two Astartes in the middle of the domed room discuss different tactics and maneuvers for fast-attack vehicles. Asamod's time spent in the Ravenwing was short, but his insights and suggestions are greatly appreciated by the White Scar. Though both chapters utilize bikes heavily, they learn that they both have differing approaches to that warfare.

Moments later, another marine comes steadily walking into the chamber. His right shoulder is adorned with the crest of Clan Raukaan, and this shows not only through heraldry. His right hand seems to have been replaced by a bionic one, the same for both his legs. All of which appear to be armored with minor plating nonetheless. Further cables run down through his armor, and on his helmet a bulky auspex device has been affixed to his right eye with multiple lenses protruding from it. Theseus, as he is called comes to a standstill and looks to his sides in a quick, observant manner before taking off his helmet and revealing a face with a rugged jawline and defined cheekbones aswell close-cut hair and a bionic eye in the same location his auspex was located. "Greetings, battle brothers" he says in a stern, albeit feisty voice "Would it be safe for me to assume we are not yet fully gathered?"

Tarkimachus inclines his head curtly. "You are correct. Welcome, Brother of the Iron Hands." The Ultramarines Honorguard stands from his throne, and descends the raised platform. The ancient Blood Angel came with. Tarikmachus approaches Theseus to clasp his arm in greeting. "I am Tarikmachus of the Ultramarines."

Theseus clasps Tarkimachus' arm. "I am Theseus, it is my pleasure to meet." he says as he stands back again. He inclines his head respectfully towards both Bellimo and Tarkinmachus and continues "Tell me, if I may... Would either of you know who else it is we are expecting? I have been ill-informed on the matter."

"Patience, brother. We will know soon enough." Tarkimachus maglocks his helmet at his side. Every Astartes in the room is unarmed, save for a pistol and a knife, while Bellimo only has one weapon, his Rune sword. It rests in it's sheathe. The handle is a pair of angelic wings, with the blood angels tear-drop symbol in the middle.

The three other Astartes greet the Iron Hands in turn. Afterwards, the White Scar and the Dark Angel return to their discussion. Tarkimachus and Bellimo do not return to the thrones however.

Very soon, the Astartes in the domed room pick up the unmistakable sound of immensely heavy footfalls and the whine of servos. It grows louder and louder, until the source of it steps through the archway. A Space Wolves Terminator by the name of Gragmar, his armor adorned with pelts, skulls and totems. Tarkimachus allows a thin grin at the Wolf. He would wear his terminator armor to a meeting. The Wolf's helmet is maglocked at his side, revealing an old, battle-worn face that exudes an almost youthful eagerness for the fight. He has a long mop of red hair, permeated with streaks of grey, and a braided beard. Behind him comes a hard-faced Ravenguard named Shrak. Without his weapons or jump pack, he looks just like a tactical marine. Four more Astartes file in behind them, all wearing helmets. Each from the Imperial Fists; Faltid, Excoriators; Kersh, Dark Angels; Belaliar, and Crimson Fists; Alejo .

Gjenjho face involuntarily tightens at the sight of a Ravenguard. He quickly tries to suppress his ill-mannered feelings. They will do no good for the upcoming hunts.

The greetings are once again, short. Small groups begin to form in the room. The Dark Angel and Ravenguard join the White Scar and other Dark Angel, while the three sons of Dorn group together. Each remember each other from the previous Feast of Blades. They had not talked much; only saw each other fight, or had fought against each other. Tarkimachus was pleased for the sons of Dorn having their own brotherhood ritual. It made bonding this group easier. Though he was still worried about the Ravenguard, the White Scar and the Iron Hands... His thoughts are cut short. Gragmar approaches him.
"You're thinking to be the one in charge here?" the Wolf asks.
The Ultramarine shakes his head. "No, but it may just turn out that way. We need to evaluate each other, then select the most appropriate leader."
The Wolf snorts. Perhaps that was a laugh? Tarkimachus wonders. "Looks like you're not stuck up like most of the Maccragians I've met."
Tarkimachus just tilts his head forward. "I know you meant to compliment me, Wolf Brother, but do not speak ill of my chapter brothers."

Theseus stands next to the wall, crossing his arms and taking a good look around the room. He focuses on the small group of Imperial Fists, or rather, those having descended from their lineage. In particuliar, he takes special note of the Excoriator's power armor. While having been painted black, the battle scars on his his armor plating, which his chapter was so famed for keeping interested him. Though nothing of the likes would be seen among his own kind. The flesh is weak after all, and how else could one put their life in the hands gear in such a sub-optimal state? It shouldn't matter, though he'd have find out who he'd be putting his trust into and covering with his favored plasma cannon would be evident soon enough.

The Excoriator's armor clearly marks him as a veteran; dozens of battle-scars mark his armor. The writing next to them, denoting their cause and time were painted over in gold, so to not be obscured by the Deathwatches black.
The Imperial Fist is outwardly, nothing special. Plain armor with a few trinkets.
The Crimson fist has the same auspex implants and improved tactical read-outs that the Iron Hands has. Another Devastator.

The Wolf grunts, the closest Tarkimachus will get to an apology. "I would say one of us three are the best suited. "
Bellimo says "Let us wait, before we attempt to create a hierarchy. Not all of us are here."
Gragmar growls low in frustration; not at his brothers, but at the waiting. "I am impatient. The Wolves are not creatures created to wait."
Tarkimachus puts a hand on the colossal Gragmar's terminator plate shoulder. "As am I eager. Once we are assembled and met, we are all to brief, down in the laboratories. The Inquisitor has things to show us."

Tarkimachus takes his hand back, and gives a predators grin. "Has the Wolf ever hunted Tau?"

Interested to find out more about a fellow devastator that would be serving alongside of him, Theseus slowly walks up to the group of Imperial Fists as he continues to look around what other chapters he may be serving with. It came to mind how much the Imperial Fists and their successors favored the use of bolters, so it would be of no suprise if the Crimson Fist handled a heavy variant. It certainly wouldn't cost him a hand however, bolters are far less volatile than some of the more dangerous weapons in the arsenal of a Space Marine. As he comes to a standstill he greets the group of Marines "Greetings, sons of Dorn. Tell me, what campaigns have each of you served in?"

"Far too many to say, in such a short time." The Imperial Fist says curtly. He doesn't mean to evade the question, only that now isn't the time to recall. The other two veterans nod their head. "I am sure you understand." Says Kersh, the Excoriator. Up close, it's easy to make out the gold inlaid writing above his armors battle scars. From different worlds, different weapons and different species, his armor telling a tale of a veteran of two-hundred years.

"If you must be so inquisitive", the Crimson fist begins, with undisguised venom "I wield any weapon that is fit for the mission." He'd heard that the Iron Hands were a chapter that spoke very little. So far, not living up to expectations.

A Scout Marine of the Raven Guard slowly walks into the room.

His left hand rests on the pommel of his sword, and his right hand brushes a lock of his medium length black hair out of his brown eyes.
He looks around the room at the others, preferring to speak only when spoken to.

Every Astartes already in the room takes notice of the scouts arrival, giving some form of greeting, non-verbal or otherwise. A nod of the head, the aquila salute; the gesture of taking both your hands, forming the aquila against their chest, or a simple "Well-met, brother." Besides that, they understand the Ravenguard's preference of solitude.

Gjenjho's gaze keeps on the Scout Marine longer than any. To a White Scar, a single Ravenguard is cause for alert... but two may be difficult.

Shortly after that, three more Astartes arrive together. A tall, proud Stormwarden, and Minotaur that exudes an aura of hostility, much like the Space Wolf Gragmar. The final is a rather plain looking individual. Nothing about this Scout Marine of the Adulator's chapter stands out. A true son of their chapter.

Bellimo's face tightens at the sight of the Stormwarden, a flash of emotion that Tarkimachus reads immediately. This Deathwatch team will have much bad blood in it... and he feels safe in assuming that it'll be his duty to get rid of it so they can perform their duty.

The domed room's doors swing shut behind an Inquisitor and a troupe of servitors. The Inquisitor looks ancient indeed, and entirely held together by his extensive augmetics. Both of his arms, his jaw, left eye, right leg below the knee, and a spine brace to keep him straight. Much of the more intrusive augmetics are hidden underneath his inquisitorial stormcloak.

His troupe of servitors are a curiosity indeed. A mismatched band of full-grown adults, with their limbs hobbled and reduced, hopping about like  strange creatures, or small children who've undergone less extensive augmentation. The servitor transformation and programming has stolen all of their free will and memory, essentially reduced to robotics with flesh grafted around them. They constantly emit a low humming prayer, as they follow the Inquisitor, holding scrolls and data-slates, recording every detail they come across.
"Greetings, Angels of Death." The Inquisitor wheezes out in a machine-like voice. He bows low, in deference to the Emperor's descendants. "This day marks the beginning of your tenure with the Deathwatch... for however long the Emperor needs you in this specialized organ. "

After a pause to collect his thoughts, the Inquisitor continues. "I am Lord Inquisitor Learmi. My only regret, is that you will have no time to familiarize yourselves with your new battle-brothers. But that regret will not change the facts. Even as we speak, we prepare to make the jump to warp, to your missions destination. If there are no questions, I will escort the fifteen of you to the Biologis lab for debriefing."

The Inquisitor wheezes and coughs, seemingly at once. "As I just said sir, once we are in the Biologis lab. It would be better brief you, while explaining the race you hunt." He smiles, ignoring the redundant question. "You will enjoy the purity of the hunt before you... Not that bitter affair of hunting fallen brothers..." Learmi winces, and some of the Astartes narrow their eyes at the mention of the Great Enemy, Astartes fallen to Chaos. In particular, the Dark Angels show clear signs of anger, at even a mention.

"Will you let me guide you, Astartes?" The ancient Inquisitor asks, sweeping his arm to the exit doors.

Tarkimachus inclines his head. "Please do, venerable Inquisitor." The Ultramarine takes the head of the Astartes group, much as he had already expected he would. Ever were the Ultramarines blessed, and cursed with superior leadership. He leads the procession behind the old Inquisitor and his troupe of disfigured servitors. Tarkimachus always held disdain for servitors... Such wasteful tainting of the perfection of the human form.

Ghenjho continues his debate with Asamod and Belaliar over the approach of Assault-bike mounted attacks. It's a friendly one, but clearly competitive.

Tarkimachus is thankful for that. Some tension removed.

Bellimo follows at the back of the group, taking measure of his brothers.

The trip to the Biologis lab is a short one. Ship menials scurry out of the way, in awe of the immortal angels before them, but also afraid. People have described an Astartes looking at them, as feeling the same as a loaded weapon being aimed at them.

The Biologis labs is an open space, filled with large tanks, filled with amniotic fluids and xenos specimens, and operating theaters. Banks of cogitator's surround the blood-stained slabs used for examining specimens, all manned by red-robed Adeptus Mechanicus priests of the Biologis branch, as well as assistant servitors. The curiosity in the air is palpable, as xenos of all species are examined in side and out, torn open to see what makes them tick, and how the Emperor's servants may better rid the universe of their filthy taint. Only Man is fit to inhabit the stars, after all. Upon entering, a quick blurt of machine code is emitted by one of the Senior Biologis Magos's, beckoning the Inquisitor to come. The Astartes, without the proper implants, cannot understand the Machine Code language, but the Inquisitor can.

He leads his party to the Magos's operation theater. The operating table is a polished metal slab, fifteen feet by fifteen feet, with a many-tooled, many-armed dissection machine mounted on the roof above them. The Astartes fan out on three sides of the table, leaving the fourth side for the Magos and the Inquisitor. On the blood table lays eight naked xenos bodies. Small, seemingly fragile things with weak limbs and standing at only five-foot-six. Their skin is blue and rough, and appear to be largely humanoid in their anatomy. Their faces are flat, and instead of a nose, posses a strange t-shaped crest. Their legs end in goat-like hoofs, rather than feet.
Gjenjho the White Scar spits on the floor beside him. "Tau." He declares, bitterly. Tarkimachus and the two Dark Angels present wear their shared disgust on their face. Clearly, they've had experience with the strange xenos.
The Magos shows no emotion at the White Scar spitting in his operating theater. Either the priest cares not, or his metal face can no longer show emotion. His hands with ten fingers on each click strangely in an erratic pattern. "Affirmative: The xenos species known as Tau." The Priests voice is a strange one indeed. Devoid of emotion, but almost harmonious in it's pattern. His mouth-grill flashes in conjunction with his words. "Educational: I will enlighten the Adeptus Astartes on the Tau race to better prepare them." The Magos raises his left hand, both filled with haptic sensors, and waves it to the side. A hololithic diagram of a bissected Tau appears above the table.
"Educational: The Tau race hails from an oxygen-rich planet, similar in structure to Old Terra. It possesses weaker gravity than Terra's. This results in their race being smaller in stature and physical capabilities. The Tau do not live as long as the standard human life-span. The Tau have poor eye-sight when compared to the average human."

Some of the Astartes unfamiliar with Tau question to themselves, why then, are the Tau even a threat?

The Magos's optics click several times, and he taps his hands together. "Observatory: an excess amount of aggression pheromones found inside the altered Astartes physiology has been detected in this area. Recommendation: Lower your kill-urges. Understanding is needed. Not aggression."
The more surly Astartes comply, agreeing with the Magos. A clear head is needed. They know who the Magos is speaking to specifically, but will not say anything about it.

Tarkimachus looks to the Magos. "Magos, what is the best way to kill them?"

The Magos taps his hands together. After a short second, every Astartes in the room recieves an information packet. An extensive document of all information that's been gathered on the Tau's combat doctrine, including informational excerpts of battles waged against the Tau by Imperial forces. What commanders did to win against the Tau, and in some cases, that fatal mistakes led to the failure of the Imperial forces.
The documents are stored in their armor's memory, and can be accessed later when they wish to learn.
